Route: Guaymas/San Carlos to Alamos
Date: December 4, 2008
Logged By: Mike and Terri Church
Vehicle: Pickup with Camper towing a Jeep Wrangler (40 Ft. Total Length)
Today’s route begins on Mex 15 libre on the road through Guaymas at the San Carlos intersection. The log before this ended at this point. The route goes through Guaymas, avoiding the toll booth on the Guaymas bypass cuota road, and rejoins Mex 15 south of town. Today’s section of Mex 15 is 4-lane with mostly no shoulders. The road surfacing in this stretch is older and there are few potholes, the surface is rougher with sections of uneven patched areas.
North of Cd Obregon at Km 26 we exit to the right for Bacum. This is the route to bypass the toll station north of Cd Obregon. We rejoin Mex 15 at a big circle with a waterfall in the middle of the lanes on the southern edge of Cd Obregon. The total distance of the bypass route is 18 miles (29 km). The route via the cuota is almost the same at 18.1 miles (29.1 km). The bypass starts on a 2-lane road in mostly good condition and finishes on a 4-lane blvd through the outskirts of Cd Obregon.
We again exit Mex 15 near Km 197 on a road signed for Villa Juárez, the bypass route around the toll booth south of Cd Obregon. This is a longer bypass of 32.5 miles (52.3 km). The route following the cuota is 18 miles (29 km). The bypass route is 2-lane with no shoulders and in places scattered potholes and rough surfacing. This road meets back up with Mex 15 near Km 167 just north of Navajoa. We do not recommend it, particularly now since we found abandoned heavy equipment blocking the road at one point. A rig larger than ours would not have been able to pass.
From Navajoa the road to Alamos is a very nice newly widened and resurfaced 2-lane road with wide shoulders. Alamos recently suffered storm damage resulting in a few short sections of breaks in the paving and 1 bridge damaged. The bridge is currently 1 lane. Bridge and road repairs are in progress.

099.8 Miles (161.0 Km) – We turn right, signed for Villa Juárez (nothing says libre) – just before Km 197. This is the beginning of the bypass around the toll booth south of Ciudad Obregon. The road is 2-lane with no shoulders and scattered potholes. Note that we do not recommend this bypass route. It is long, has poor roads, and this time was blocked by parked heave equipment. You’d be better off staying on the toll road, we will next time.
100.0 Miles (161.3 Km) – Rough road with trucks on the left. This is probably a low-cost route around the toll station. We didn’t check it out. These “ejido bypasses” often cause rig damage and they are not free. Think twice before taking this one.

114.9 Miles (185.3 Km) -- At a T Villa Juarez is to the right on 158 and Navajoa is to the left – we go left. Just before this T there was a piece of heavy road-building equipment blocking the road. Along with other traffic, we had to drive into the ditch around the equipment. After we make this turn, the road continues as 2 lanes. For a couple of miles it is very nice with wide shoulders, then the shoulders stop and the road surface becomes a little rough.
116.1 Miles (187.3 Km) -- A road goes to the right to Huatabampo. We continue straight for Navajoa.

136.2 Miles (219.7 Km) -- Pemex #4143 on the right with magna, premium, and
diesel. We’ve overnighted here in the past, lots of noisy trucks. The Periferico goes to the right just after this station. We don’t turn.

137.9 Miles (222.4 Km) -- Pemex #2136 on the right with magna, premium, and diesel.
139.4 Miles (224.8 Km) -- Cross railroad tracks.

diesel. This is a big station with good access for RVs.
