 Route: Tepic to Guadalajara
Date: December 21, 2008
Logged By: Mike and Terri Church
Vehicle: Pickup with Camper towing a Jeep Wrangler (40 Ft. Total Length)

Much of the road between Tepic and Guadalajara is mountainous terrain. There is a both a cuota (Mex 15D) and a free road (Mex 15) running the entire distance between the two cities. The cuota is an excellent 4-lane divided highway with 3 toll booths with expensive prices for RVs. We’ve attempted to minimize the expense of this drive by driving the cuota on only the most mountainous section known as the Barrancas. By doing this we’ll pay only one toll.

We leave Tepic on the libre and follow it 57.7 miles (88.2 km) to the town of Ixtlan del Rio. The libre road in this section passes through several small towns and one short section of mountains. We’ll enter the cuota in the town of Ixtlan del Rio and follow it 31.8 miles (51.3 km) to the town of Magdalena. The cuota through this section allows us to avoid the slow trucks crawling through the Barrancas. From Magdalena we’ll follow the libre the remaining 41.9 miles (67.6 km) into Guadalajara. This final section of the libre is 2-lane in excellent condition with passing lanes, becoming 4-lane for the final 10.6 miles (17.1 km) into Guadalajara.
