May 19, 2010 Addition - There is a great BLM campground named Riverview just a few miles NE of Safford Az. Good tasting water, with several faucets between very large camp sites. (100' or more between them.) New vault toilets and great day use areas next to the Gila River, Beautiful views and a very private, spacious feeling. Four pull throughs suitable for big rigs and 10 back in sites or pull in sites that are over 80' long with tables and shade shelters at each. Only $5 a night! From junction of AZ 191 and 70 go W on 70 4.9 miles then L (NE) 8.1 miles on Sanchez Rd. Then L onto gravel rd into Gila Box Riparian for 4.2 miles to campground. Last 4 miles has three short dips (about 100 yards down and 100 years back up) that are about a 15% grade. Most of these dips are black topped and were no problem for us towing our trailer. The gravel road portion has a few wash board sections, but in general is a fairly decent gravel road. If you are really fussy where you take your expensive big rig you would have to drive really slow and careful in several places but you would be Ok.
There is another BLM campground called Owl Creek that does not have water but I am told has great views. This is further N on 191 about an hour from Safford, then S on Back Country Byway, a gravel road, for about 12 miles. The BLM office number in Safford is 928-348-4400. Great people. - Information courtesy of Melissa and Floyd Duell
